Funky Festivals

Welcome to my two newest followers, Peggy and SparkleFarkle.  Thanks for the support! It is exciting to see new faces and names in the Followers box.  I appreciate you taking the time to read and sign up!

A few weeks ago I wrote about the Howl-O-Weenie Festival, a Halloween celebration of Dachshunds.  The idea of a festival devoted to wiener dogs dressed up for Halloween seemed crazy, but I was hooked from the moment of my arrival. This led me to consider other festivals that may sound nutty, but I'll bet they are fun to attend.  Just reading about these annual events and looking at the photos posted on the websites proved to me that Americans are a fun-loving bunch.  Check these out:

1.  Roswell UFO Festival, Roswell, New Mexico.

About 20,000 humanoids attend this multi-day party devoted to all things UFO. There are workshops, parades,  UFO experts (huh?) and ooh-gobs of people garbed in alien costumes. The whole city participates with fireworks, free concerts, etc. This is a blow-out celebration in the little desert town famous for the supposed 1947 crash of an alien spaceship. I can't vouch for the veracity of that claim, but these folks sure know how to throw a costume party.

2.  Summer Redneck Games, Dublin, Georgia

Touted as "more fun than indoor plumbing". How can you not be intrigued by a gathering with a tagline like that? The games include such grueling athletic competitions as redneck horseshoes (tossing toilet seats), armpit serenading, and bobbing for pigs' feet, to name just a few.  The winner's trophy? A crushed, mounted beer can.  *sniff*  Makes me proud to be from Georgia.

3.  The Wayne Chicken Show, Wayne, Nebraska

This annual three day party for poultry includes such activities as the world's largest chicken dance and a chicken hat contest. Personally, I'd like to be present for the National Cluck-Off in which contestants have fifteen seconds to offer their best chicken impersonation.  I can think of a few congressman and senators who would make fine competitors.

What crazy festivals are you aware of? Better yet, have you attended any? Can you top one of these for sheer zaniness? Let's hear about it, buttercup!

Til next time -
