What's the Buzz?

In my search for paying markets I came across Buzzymag.com. Their tag line is "Literary stimulation for Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror fans," and they are currently accepting submissions.

The following is a direct snippet from their web page.

BUZZY MAG

"Buzzy Mag is looking for original science fiction, fantasy and horror short stories up to 10,000 words. Thriller, suspense and paranormal tales that cross into traditional speculative fiction are welcome. In addition, we are interested in pieces that may be able to be developed into full length novels for publication by Buzzy Multimedia at a future date."

Payment is 5 cents USD per word.

Buzzy Mag offers something else that drew my attention: Beta reading groups that offer critiques. I've not heard of other publishers doing this, so to me it is a unique concept. From the Buzzy Mag submissions page:

"If we feel your work is a good fit for Buzzy Mag we will contact you via email. At that time we will assign you to a Beta reading group consisting of two or three other authors. There your work will be read by two other beta-readers who will give you feed-back and criticism. You will be expected to do likewise for each of them in return. After the beta reading process is completed, and if we accept your story, we will send a contract to you for signing. (about our beta reading process) Once we receive your signed contract, your work will proceed over to our professional editors."

Interesting, huh? Have you seen this anywhere else? It occurs to me that if they like your work well enough to include you in their Beta group, even if you aren't accepted for publication you still receive the benefit of an independent critique of your work. Talk about a win-win situation!

Buzzymag.com has been added to my WRITERS - Tools page (see the tab under the blog header.)

(OOPS -- late posting correction:  I've added it to the WRITERS - Paying Markets page (tab under blog header). Sorry for the confusion!  But I hope you'll check out the Writers - Tools page, as well.  Lots of helpful links!)

If you opt to submit to this market, I'd love to hear about your experience with the Beta reading group. Also, if you know of other markets that employ this model, please share that information as well.

See you for Book Blurb Friday!
